AMP has unveiled a new national advertising campaign aimed at encouraging Australians to engage more actively with their superannuation.

The integrated 'Get super close to your super' campaign, developed in partnership with CHEP Network, launched across television, outdoor and radio platforms.

It challenges the traditional dynamic between super funds and their members by depicting Australians reaching out to AMP in situations typically reserved for close friends.

Melinda Howes, AMP's Group Executive Superannuation & Investments, said the campaign was developed in response to research findings.

"Our research showed us that many Australians are disengaged from their super and that it's only when they get nearer to retirement that they appreciate its importance to their quality of life in retirement," Ms Howes said.

The advertisements feature AMP Super taking on the role of a trusted confidante in unlikely circumstances, such as discussing a crush or lamenting a bad haircut.

Through this approach, AMP aims to encourage Australians to lean on their relationship with their super fund and engage in meaningful conversations about maximising their retirement savings well before they start thinking about retiring.

"Through this creative and light-hearted campaign AMP wants to encourage more people to 'get close to their super', so they can make the most of their working years and maximise their retirement savings," Ms Howes said.

The campaign marks AMP's first major above-the-line advertising focus on superannuation in several years.

"We've got a really compelling proposition for members, and this is the first time in many years that AMP is going above the line with a focus on super," Ms Howes said.

The 'Get super close to your super' campaign will be featured across television, radio, outdoor advertising, social media and online platforms.

It builds on AMP's 'Whatever wealthy you want' campaign, launched in February 2023, which encompassed AMP's broader business units across banking, retirement and investment solutions.

The campaign is underpinned by AMP's stated purpose of helping people create their tomorrow.

AustralianSuper, Australia's largest superannuation fund, is calling for increased focus on the gender pay gap and its long-term impacts on women's retirement savings this Equal Pay Day, August 19.

The current national gender pay gap of 12% means women must work an additional 50 days into the new financial year to earn the same as men did in the previous year, according to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA).

Rose Kerlin, AustralianSuper's Chief Member Officer, highlighted the far-reaching consequences of this disparity.

"The gender pay gap doesn't just affect wages; it permeates every aspect of women's lives," Ms Kerlin said. "Women, on average, earn $238 less per week than men, significantly impacting their lifetime earnings, superannuation savings, and retirement security."

AustralianSuper's analysis reveals stark differences in retirement outcomes between men and women. A 30-year-old man with average earnings can expect a superannuation balance of $882,000 at retirement age, compared to $737,000 for a woman - a $145,000 difference.

The fund's insights also show:

• Only 39% of women feel confident about living well in retirement, compared to 53% of men.
• Women taking 10 years out of the workforce have on average 12% less income in retirement.
• Women aged 60-64 have an average super balance of $260,981, compared to $338,655 for men.

Ms Kerlin emphasised the need for collaborative action from businesses, government, and individuals to address these inequalities.

"Employers can play an important role in supporting women's retirement savings by paying super on parental leave, and offering flexible work arrangements," she said.

The fund welcomed the government's recent introduction of superannuation payments on Paid Parental Leave but stressed more action is needed.

Ms Kerlin offered advice for women to improve their retirement prospects, including discussing superannuation options with employers, collaborating with partners on contributions, and taking an active role in managing their super.

"Your employer contributions are one piece of the puzzle, but you should also take ownership and be engaged with your super," she said.

AustralianSuper, which manages over $341 billion for more than 3.4 million members, has been recognised as a WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality for 13 years.

Key findings from AMP's TapIn technical service for the half-year ending June 30, 2024 include:

• Over 6,800 calls and email queries received from financial advisers
• Email queries increased 40% compared to the same period last year
• Nearly 20% of questions related to superannuation contributions and home ownership issues
• Over 10% of queries involved transfer balance caps, means testing, or TPD benefit tax issues
• One in ten queries concerned death benefits, asset treatment, or condition of release

John Perri, AMP head of technical strategy and TapIn, said, "The last six months have seen a significant focus on super contributions as more and more Australians look to make the most of unused catch up concessional contribution provisions."

Other common topics included:

• Innovative retirement income streams
• Limited recourse borrowing arrangements
• Aged care

The data aligns with previous AMP research showing that most older Australians find the retirement system complex, with nearly half unsure about age pension eligibility.

Perri added, "As Australia's retirement system begins to reach maturity, instilling greater confidence in the ability of everyday Australians to navigate the important transition from accumulation to pension phase remains paramount."

The findings highlight the critical role financial advisers play in simplifying complex retirement issues for their clients, particularly as recent tax changes have prompted many Australians to bring forward deductions through personal superannuation contributions.

Despite the evident need for guidance, over three-quarters of those surveyed by AMP had not spoken to a financial adviser about retirement planning, underscoring the importance of reducing barriers to accessing quality, affordable advice.

Damian Graham, Chief Investment Officer at Aware Super, attributed the strong performance to several factors:

• A highly diversified portfolio
• Growing international exposure, particularly to US equities

Graham emphasized the benefits of the fund's lifecycle design, which adjusts risk exposure as members age:

Speaking exclusively to The Business Of, a podcast from the University of New South Wales Business School, Ms McPhee highlighted the long-term consequences of the gender pay gap, stating, "Where we might have a 13 per cent pay gap, by the time you reach retirement, that's a 30 to 40 per cent retirement gap."

She added, "Older females, retired females, are the fastest growing population within the homeless community because there's been this baked-in inequality in the system."

While superannuation funds do not determine salaries, Ms McPhee emphasized their influential voice and important role in shaping policy. She noted that since the royal commission, the system has become more competitive and human-centred, evolving from a "gentlemen's agreement-style, industrial relations-style industry" to a more dynamic one.

Aware Super also faces the challenge of balancing short-term and long-term investment perspectives to maximize returns for members. Ms McPhee stressed the importance of adopting a long-term view, stating, "It's one thing to have money to retire, but if we don't have a wonderful world to live in, it feels counterintuitive. So climate change and energy transition are really important to us."

One example of Aware Super's long-term investment strategy is their "key worker affordable housing plan," which involves a build-to-rent program. Ms McPhee explained, "We started looking at the build-to-rent market. How might we become a landlord, essentially, as a superannuation fund? And how might we then offer up more affordable rent to essential workers? So that's what we did."

She added, "People often say, 'Are you, by giving more affordable housing, giving up rent that would ultimately be returned for members? But what we found is by giving that to teachers, nurses and police officers, they generally stay in properties far longer, they do less damage to the properties. And the communities that they build have been extraordinary. So what we're seeing is the profitability of those rental agreements over a long time."

Dr Juliet Bourke, the host of The Business Of and a global consultant and academic at UNSW Business School, commented on the potential for organizations with institutional power to achieve wide-scale social good, like closing the retirement pay gap, following a moment of reckoning like a royal commission.
