Australian employers have been put on notice after a recent survey found that 40 per cent of workers are planning to look for a new role in the next six months.

The survey of 1,000 Australian workers by Employment Hero also found that 15 per cent were already searching for a new job and 48 per cent were planning to begin the hunt for a new job within the next year.

“If businesses are looking to grow quickly following the pandemic, they need to start getting prepared now, as we have six months before Australia’s projected ‘Great Resignation’ ushers in the ‘Great Recruitment Rush’,” said Employment Hero co-founder and CEO Ben Thompson.

A lack of career opportunities was the major factor for 31 per cent of those seeking a new role in a different organisation.

No pay rise was the main driving force for 30 per cent and 26 per cent identified underappreciation as their top gripe.

“Handing out pay rises is not always feasible for businesses against the backdrop of the pandemic, but if businesses can afford to give their workers a salary increase, now is the time for them to take action,” said Alex Hattingh, chief people officer at Employment Hero.

“Similarly, if a business doesn’t have the means or structure available to offer promotions at this time, they can set up a career development pathway for their staff.”

Forty-seven per cent of workers said a salary increase would encourage them to keep their current role while 25 per cent said they would remain on board if offered a promotion.

“Businesses need to turn their attention back to growth, but with a people-centric perspective,” Mr Thompson said.

“If people fuel a business, how can businesses keep and find the best people who will be invested in seeing their business scale? It takes time, effort and consideration, but the more businesses invest in their employees, the more they invest in their business.”

A new report from CBA has shown that it may actually pay to be in lockdown, as growth in household income surged ahead in NSW and Victoria.

It was shown that the reduction in household income was more than offset by government support payments, with an increase in savings expected to facilitate a bounce in services-related spending and the economy post-lockdown.

However, while the bank expects household spending to surge once businesses reopen, others hold doubt that continued earnings growth is likely post-lockdown.

Speaking to nestegg, Emmanuel Datt, chief investment officer of Datt Capital, noted he expects a drop in earnings once stay-at-home orders are lifted. 

“While Australia is on the right track in terms of reopening, ultimately, the reality is that Australia is in a recession and the reopening will expose this harsh fact,” he said.

According to Mr Datt, casual workers who are currently on generous emergency payments from the government will not be incentivised to re-enter the labour market immediately once lockdowns end.

“Once people stop working, they get used to living a certain way,” he said.

CBA’s report found that NSW government payments made up 50 per cent of wages and salaries paid in August. In May, before the lockdown, they were worth around 25 per cent.

The COVID-19 disaster payment scheme currently enables access to $200, $450 or $750 per week to those out of a job, depending on the number of hours lost.

Mr Datt stated “there will be casual workers earning a lot more on government benefits than they would have done previously”.

Alongside perhaps earning more than they would have prior to lockdown, households are currently not able to spend a great deal, sending household savings soaring.

According to the CBA report, accumulated savings average $11,200 per person more than what is normally expected in pre-pandemic conditions. 

Mr Datt expects many casual workers to spend time living off these savings before returning to the labour market for less.

What’s more, Mr Datt expects to see a further capping of earnings, as governments enact measures to recoup lost funds.

“Government stimulus measures cannot last forever and the ‘piper must be paid’ at some point,” he said.

Mr Datt expects the introduction of a high-income surcharge measure, similar to what was implemented after the global financial crisis, further taxing workers by approximately 2–3 per cent should they earn over a threshold value.

Moreover, he predicted increases in duty on immovable assets such as real estate.

The RBA has provided a snapshot of the current economic climate and how it intends to achieve economic growth into the future.

In order for Australia’s currency to be preserved over the longer term and for sustained economic growth, the RBA believes Australia needs to achieve its inflation target of between 2 and 3 per cent.

It is only then that the bank will consider lifting interest rates, despite not having done so since November 2010 — having held or cut rates 129 times in a row.

Despite history not being on its side, the RBA hopes pushing the economy to full employment could spark pay gains for workers and eventually lead to inflation growth.

“This assists businesses and households in making sound investment decisions, underpins the creation of jobs and protects the savings of Australians,” the RBA stated.

“Sustaining high employment means not only do more people have jobs, but they also have better opportunities in life. High rates of unemployment are costly for the economy and hurt our society.”

Australia’s labour market had been tightening rapidly, with a mix of fiscal support and an economic recovery led by pent-up demand lifting the need for workers.

The jobless rate had fallen to 4.6 per cent in July, but with much of the east coast now in its 10th week of lockdowns by the time the employment numbers were revealed, it was predicted they could already have been out of date.

As a consequence of prolonged lockdowns, unemployment is expected to rise in the coming months.

“The timing of the July labour market survey benefited from Victoria’s June reopening but mostly missed the impact of the NSW lockdown and Victoria’s July lockdown,” AMP Capital’s Dr Shane Oliver explained at the time the ABS data was unveiled.

Allowing for a fall in participation and an increase in those working zero hours indicates that “effective unemployment” actually rose to around 5.5 per cent.

“Official unemployment is likely to rise to around 5.5 to 6 per cent in August and September due to the lockdowns, but hours worked are likely to take the bulk of the hit,” Dr Oliver said.

Meanwhile, wages growth also softened over the June quarter, with only small pockets of wage pressure flowing from international border closures.

While the unemployment rate remains key to Australia reaching its inflation target, the RBA also said it recognises its monetary policy decisions have implications for the banking operations in the domestic market, but it underlined that one of its key objectives is to secure the stability of the financial system.

“There are several distinct aspects to the Reserve Bank’s role in the payments system, including those of policymaker, overseer and supervisor, and owner and operator of key national payments infrastructure,” it said.

As such, the central bank explained its role is to control the risk in the financial system, promote efficiency of the payment system and promote competition in the market for payment services.

Finally, the RBA explained its role with the government.

“Insofar as the Commonwealth of Australia requires it to do so, the Reserve Bank must act as banker for the Commonwealth. The Reserve Bank’s banking services fall into two components: those services provided in its capacity as the central bank, and those transactional banking services it provides to Australian government agencies,” it concluded.

61 days is how much extra time a woman must spend in the workforce to achieve the same financial outcome as her male counterpart, with the gender gap expected to grow further, research has revealed.

Stats released by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) show full -time working women in Australia are taking home $265.50 less per week than their male counterparts.

Not only are Australian women making less, the gap between men and women’s salaries is only increasing, despite it being a legal requirement since 1969 for equal pay amongst women and men.

In fact, WGEA showed progress towards women’s equality outcomes have dissipated, falling by 0.8 per cent to 14.2 per cent.

The difference was mainly driven by a rise in men’s full-time wages that far outpaced a rise in women’s wages, 1.8 per cent compared with 0.9 per cent, with the ABS particularly highlighting earnings growth in construction based on large government support during the pandemic.

“The pay gap is a historic issue that stems from out-dated views about female job commitment and roles within the workplace,” said Rosie Cairnes VP APAC at skillsoft.

“This outlook can take the form of unconscious bias, or outright prejudice. The nature of unconscious bias is that it goes unseen, yet its effects can become highly visible and consequential.”

Highlighting the unconscious bias that happens at many big firms, Ms Cairnes pointed out companies need to create programs to increase awareness for personal bias’ as well as create ways of combating it.

“The reality we must face is that if we have brains, we have bias. For businesses that care deeply about their values and reputations, it is important to understand that all forms of bias and discrimination can manifest rapidly and erode a company’s integrity - and its bottom line - from the inside out,” she continued.

WGEA director Mary Wooldridge said the increase in the pay gap was concerning and served as a warning to ensure continued focus, effort and commitment to drive it back down again.

“Equal Pay Day is an ideal opportunity to remind employers around the country that one of the key levers of change is through gender pay audits. These audits help employers identify and address discriminatory pay, to ensure that women are equally compensated and valued,” she said.

Josh Frydenberg is yet to comment on this latest gender pay gap rise, nor has anyone in the Coalition Government yet acknowledged it including Minister for Women Marise Paye.

As it currently stands on average, women working full-time earned $1,575.50 while men working full-time earned $1,837.00.

A report released by Robert Half shows 72 per cent of Australian businesses are now open to hiring staff from a remote location.

A shortage of staff in their own area as well as cheaper remuneration have seen a surge in demand for remote workers, as a result of which roles, including finance and accounting, have seen a 394 per cent increase in remote job ads in just 12 months.

According to Robert Half Asia Pacific’s senior managing director, David Jones, remote work presents new opportunities for employers and employees alike.

“For employees, the rise in remote work has created the potential for professionals to secure work with a remote employer who may pay more than a local organisation as well as save on living costs by moving away from the big cities,” he said.

However, the shift to remote working might not be the necessary win employees were hoping for.

While they can choose to live and work where they please, according to Robert Half, employers are likely to take advantage with remuneration offers that match where the employee lives.

The Robert Half survey found that 38 per cent of businesses are likely to remunerate according to the location the team is headquartered, while 34 per cent would consider a hybrid of the two locations – office location and remote worker location – to set the appropriate salary benchmark.

Despite certain businesses benchmarking salaries, Mr Jones noted employees could be a major winner in this changing working dynamics.

“For instance, an employee based in a city with a lower cost of living while working remotely for an organisation who pay a higher salary based on their location may be able to increase their discretionary income.”

How much will your salary fall if you change states?

Robert Half’s findings show that salaries between states can vary by up to as much as 16 per cent for the same role and experience levels.

When looking at remuneration intent, NSW (45 per cent) and Victorian (4 per cent) organisations are more likely to remunerate a remote employee based on headquarter location than their Queensland (27 per cent) and Western Australian (30 per cent) counterparts.

At the same time, Victoria and NSW generally offer higher average salaries per equivalent role to their Queensland and Western Australian counterparts.

Highlighting the skills shortages across the country, with job vacancies reaching record highs during the pandemic, Mr Jones opined that businesses will need to look beyond their own geography when it comes to gaining more staff members.

This is creating an opportunity for workers in remote areas who can cash in on their skill set and land a city wage while working in a rural community.

“To successfully attract remote workers, remuneration strategies will need to be abreast of national salary trends in order to offer a competitive package to out-of-state applicants.

“For businesses looking to attract remote talent based in higher-paying states, they should be prepared to at least meet the remuneration standards of the applicant’s location or risk losing the candidate to a local role,” Mr Jones concluded.

Australian businesses and staff alike are waiting to see what will happen post the COVID-19 pandemic before deciding whether to increase staffing levels or change their jobs, government figures have shown.

Fresh from Australia reaching its lowest unemployment rate since 2008, the National Skills Commission (NSC) has shown businesses are taking on less staff as they wait to see what impacts lockdowns will have on their business.

In July, the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that Australia’s official unemployment rate fell from 4.9 to 4.6 per cent even though restrictions in Sydney and Melbourne were prolonged.

While politicians rejoiced at news of a falling unemployment rate, Bjorn Jarvis, head of labour statistics at the ABS, said much of the decrease in unemployment was simply Aussies dropping out of the workforce.

“Early in the pandemic, we saw large falls in participation, which we have again seen in recent lockdowns. Beyond people losing their jobs, we have also seen unemployed people drop out of the labour force,” Mr Jarvis explained.

Much like workers deciding now is not the right time to look for work, businesses are adapting the same approach and are reducing the number of advertised positions.

The Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) decreased a further 3 per cent or 7,200 job advertisements, in July 2021 to stand at 232,600.

Job advertisements decreased in 34 of the 48 detailed occupational groups during July 2021.

Hospitality workers recorded the largest fall over the month (down by 2,500 job advertisements or 32.4 per cent), followed by food trades workers (1,400 job advertisements or 20.4 per cent) and general-inquiry clerks, call centre workers and receptionists (770 job advertisements or 4.3 per cent).

Unsurprisingly, NSW bore the brunt of these lockdowns, with advertisements in the hospitality sector down 65.6 per cent, while recruitment in other occupations fell by 38 per cent.

The research also showed that much like the initial drop in 2020 when COVID-19 lockdowns first began, lower-skilled occupation groups are likely to be disproportionately impacted by job losses.

As such, the NSC revealed that despite accounting for only 37.9 per cent of total job advertisements in June 2021, falls in recruitment activity for Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations made up 59.1 per cent of the total decline over the month to July 2021.

Unemployment likely to drop

Despite unemployment appearing to strengthen, AMP Capital’s Dr Shane Oliver has warned that the latest figures are the ‘calm before the storm’, with unemployment set to spike with lockdown restrictions.

Highlighting the timing of the current data, Dr Oliver opined “it would be wrong to take much comfort from this”.

“The timing of the reference period for the July jobs survey was mainly in the first half of July and meant that it was too early to pick up significant job losses in NSW (where employment only fell by -36,000), but it picked up a rebound in employment in Victoria as it reopened from its late May-early June lockdown but missed Victoria’s subsequent lockdown,” he said.
