AMP has reported that its MyNorth Lifetime retirement income solution is delivering significant financial benefits to retirees, with an average uplift of 50% in total income.

According to AMP, MyNorth Lifetime has enabled members to increase their retirement spending by an average of $8,000 per year, while also maximising their Age Pension entitlements. Nine in ten members have seen an uplift in social security benefits, with some experiencing a 100% increase under the Assets Test.

Enhancing financial confidence in retirement

Analysis of over 1,500 customer accounts revealed that MyNorth Lifetime users are benefiting from higher levels of retirement income through a market-linked lifetime income stream. This has allowed many members to retire earlier and access greater financial security.

Ben Hillier, AMP Director of Retirement, highlighted the positive impact of the program.

“With the benefit of face-to-face advice and a rich solution that provides a higher income for life, we’re helping more Australians get the most out of retirement. That’s already translating into some really pleasing outcomes, with the majority of older Australians spending more and retiring earlier,” he said.

Addressing concerns about retirement savings

Recent findings from the Grattan Institute and Federal Treasury indicate that many retirees are not drawing down their superannuation at sustainable rates due to concerns about outliving their savings. Treasury data shows that more than half of Australian retirees withdraw only the statutory minimum from their super.

Despite rising superannuation balances—averaging over $200,000 for singles and $300,000 for couples—many retirees leave up to 65% of their super unspent by the end of their lives.

AMP’s MyNorth Lifetime aims to address these concerns by combining the flexibility of an account-based pension with the security of annuities, ensuring members can optimise their income throughout retirement.

Industry recognition and future innovation

Since its launch in 2022, MyNorth Lifetime has gained significant traction, with over $505 million invested through more than 1,500 new members. Around 70% of these members are new to AMP’s platform.

The solution has been recognised for its innovation, winning the **Chant West Lifetime Product Best Fund Award in 2024** and the **Chant West Innovation Best Fund Award in 2023**.

Edwina Maloney, AMP Group Executive, Platforms, said the response from advisers and members has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We know our members value both financial freedom and security in retirement, without having to compromise on their lifestyle choices,” she said.

“As a world-class solution, MyNorth Lifetime is solving the unique challenges that Australians face as they transition into retirement while ensuring they can optimise their Age Pension entitlements.”

The Retirement Living Council (RLC) is urging governments to streamline planning systems to boost housing supply, following a decline in confidence in age-friendly construction activity.

According to the latest Procore/Property Council Survey, confidence in retirement construction activity has fallen to its lowest level since December 2022, with capital growth expectations also declining in the September quarter.

RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon said: "We know that 67 per cent of retirement village development applications take more than 365 days to complete assessment, while 23 per cent take more than 730 days."

Gannon added: "This is alarming and unacceptable, with governments crying out for more housing supply on one hand, while seemingly holding it back at the same time."

Despite the downturn, the survey reveals that the retirement living industry maintains the strongest sentiment for construction activity compared to other sectors, surpassing residential, office, industrial and retail combined.

The RLC highlighted the potential benefits of retirement villages, noting that residents are 20 per cent less likely to require hospitalisation after nine months of living in these communities, leading to 14,000 avoided annual hospitalisations across Australia.

Gannon stated: "As a consequence, these communities are minimising the interactions older Australians have with GPs and hospitals, while importantly delaying entry into taxpayer funded aged care and saving the government $945 million annually as a result."

To improve planning systems, the RLC recommends:

1. Establishing minimum land allocations for retirement communities in under-supplied areas
2. Offering zoning or development bonuses to incentivise retirement village development
3. Introducing targets for age-friendly developments in strategic regional and metropolitan plans
4. Collaboration between planning authorities and industry to identify high-need locations and ageing hot spots

The RLC's call for action comes as Australia faces a projected 85 per cent increase in the number of people over 75 by 2040, emphasizing the need for more age-friendly housing options.

The Australian Parliament has passed new legislation that will see superannuation guarantee contributions paid on the Commonwealth Government's Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme.

Set to take effect from 1 July 2025, the reform will provide an additional 12 per cent in superannuation on top of parental leave payments.

Deanne Stewart, CEO of Aware Super and pay equity ambassador for the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, welcomed the change, calling it "a momentous step in improving retirement outcomes for women."

Stewart said: "This is a sensible, responsible and overdue step which will help improve retirement outcomes for parents, families, and particularly women."

The new law aims to address the gender retirement gap, which currently sees women retiring with approximately 25 per cent less superannuation than men.

According to Stewart, "Women still shoulder a disproportionate share of caring responsibilities in families and often take time out of the workforce to do so. This is one of the key reasons the gender retirement gap is so much bigger than the gender pay gap."

Modelling by Aware Super suggests that a low-income woman with two children, accessing 26 weeks of Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave, could be $10,700 better off at retirement due to these additional payments.

The superannuation fund notes that the benefit to individuals could be more than twice the cost of making the payment, due to compounding investment returns.

Aware Super, which manages over $175 billion on behalf of 1.1 million members, has been paying superannuation to its staff on both paid and unpaid parental leave. The fund reports that only 13 per cent of employers currently pay superannuation on unpaid parental leave, while 86 per cent with a PPL scheme pay super on leave payments.

The new legislation represents a significant step towards addressing the gender retirement gap in Australia's superannuation system.

The Retirement Living Council (RLC) has called for governments to address planning system shortfalls in preparation for Australia's ageing population, following the release of new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The latest ABS figures reveal that Australians aged 75-79 are the fastest-growing demographic, with an annual growth rate of 6.55 per cent, significantly outpacing the average overall population growth rate of 2.46 per cent.

RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon said: "With an annual growth rate of 6.55 per cent, the 75–79-year-old age group significantly out paces all other demographics with an average overall growth rate of 2.46 per cent."

Gannon highlighted that retirement village operators face significant barriers in developing age-friendly communities, with 67 per cent of development applications taking more than a year to complete assessment, and 23 per cent taking over two years.

"More red tape and complexity in planning systems won't help build the homes required to appropriately accommodate the demographic 'silver tsunami' we are facing," Gannon said.

The RLC cited research showing that retirement village residents experience improved health and social outcomes, including being 41 per cent happier and 19 per cent less likely to require hospitalisation after nine months.

Gannon added: "As a consequence, these communities are minimising the interactions older Australians have with GPs and hospitals, while importantly delaying entry into taxpayer funded aged care and saving the government $945 million annually as a result."

The RLC has proposed several policy recommendations to streamline planning systems, including establishing minimum land allocations for retirement communities in under-supplied areas and offering development bonuses to incentivise retirement village construction.

The council also suggested that state governments introduce targets for age-friendly developments in strategic regional and metropolitan plans.

These recommendations come as the RLC aims to address what it sees as a critical need for more age-appropriate housing options in light of Australia's rapidly ageing population.

The Retirement Living Council (RLC) has urged governments across Australia to prioritise age-friendly housing solutions in response to new data revealing an ageing population.

Recently released figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for 2023 show:

• 7% of the population in capital cities is aged over 75
• 9.4% of the population outside capital cities is over 75
• Over 55s make up 26% of the population in capital cities
• Over 55s account for 34% of the population outside capital cities

RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon highlighted the need for all levels of government to address the challenges of housing an ageing population.

"We have known about our ageing population for a long time now, but governments seem flat-footed in their response to accommodating and caring for this growing cohort of older Australians," Mr Gannon said.

He pointed out that over the next two decades, the number of Australians over 75 will increase by 85%, which will have significant socio-economic impacts.

Mr Gannon emphasised the potential benefits of increasing age-friendly housing supply, citing current pressures on healthcare and aged care systems.

"Hospital beds are already full, ambulances are ramping in most capital cities, aged care facilities are at capacity and most retirement villages have lengthy waiting lists," he said.

The RLC is advocating for more retirement villages, highlighting their positive impact on residents' health and wellbeing. According to Mr Gannon, retirement village residents are:

• 41% happier
• 20% less likely to require hospitalisation after nine months
• 15% more physically active
• Five times more socially active
• Twice as likely to catch up with family or friends
• Have reduced levels of depression and loneliness

Mr Gannon argued that these communities help minimise older Australians' interactions with healthcare services and delay entry into taxpayer-funded aged care, saving the government an estimated $945 million annually.

He also noted that when older Australians move into retirement villages, it frees up housing supply for younger families.

The RLC is calling on governments to take decisive action to address the housing needs of Australia's ageing population, emphasising the broader societal benefits of age-friendly housing solutions.

The research, conducted in partnership with Challenger, Australia's largest retirement income provider, surveyed approximately 1,000 Challenger customers aged over 60.

Key findings from the study include:

• Two-thirds of respondents proactively chose to enter retirement, citing financial stability, enjoying retirement while health allowed, and eligibility to access superannuation as main factors.
• Respondents who proactively chose to retire reported significantly fewer worries (51%) compared to those who retired out of necessity (32%).
• Over 50% of respondents noted 'enjoyment' as their key purpose in retirement, followed by 'keeping well' (22%).

Lead researcher Professor Joanne Earl said, "Proactively choosing how and when to retire may be the secret ingredients to wellbeing in our golden years."

The study also found that retirees with a guaranteed income outperformed on every happiness metric compared to Challenger's earlier Retirement Happiness Index Research.

Challenger Chief Executive, Customer, Mandy Mannix stated, "The data clearly indicates that annuities, or some element of guaranteed regular income in retirement can be a gamechanger."

With 10% of Australia's population set to retire in the coming decade, the study highlights the importance of guaranteed and longevity-focused retirement income strategies.

The research contrasts with broader Australian population trends, where retirement is often triggered by factors such as reaching retirement age, illness, or unemployment.

This Australian-first study provides valuable insights for both retirees and the industry on the role and importance of guaranteed income streams in retirement planning.
