ANZ is urging customers and the broader community to remain vigilant against scammers impersonating trusted organisations in the wake of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Scammers are known to exploit crises by posing as banks, insurance providers, charities, or disaster relief services to deceive individuals into revealing personal information or making fraudulent payments.

ANZ Head of Customer Protection, Shaq Johnson, warned that fraudsters often disguise themselves as recovery support services to manipulate those affected.

“Scammers can disguise themselves as recovery support, manipulating those affected by the crisis into sharing sensitive information or making fraudulent payments under false pretenses,” he said.

“Staying vigilant and taking simple precautions can help safeguard your recovery journey and prevent further setbacks during an already challenging time. Since scammers thrive on urgency and uncertainty, a thoughtful pause can be your strongest defence against fraudulent activity.”

How to spot a scam

ANZ advises customers to be cautious of unexpected requests for personal details and provides the following guidance:
- Verify the source – Be wary of calls, emails, or messages claiming to be from a bank or insurance company requesting urgent payments or unusual account activity. Confirm legitimacy by using official contact details from the organisation’s website.
- Think before you click – Legitimate organisations will never request personal information via a link in an email or text message.
- Be cautious of fake charity appeals – Always verify the authenticity of charity requests by checking their registration with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
- Check for errors – Scams often contain poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or unnatural phrasing.

ANZ scam prevention measures

ANZ reminds customers that it will never:
- Request online banking passwords, PINs, ANZ Shield codes, or one-time passcodes.
- Ask customers to click on a link to log in or enter sensitive details.
- Request remote access to devices.
- Instruct customers to transfer funds to another account to keep them safe.
- Invite customers to join an online chat for security verification.

Reporting scams and seeking assistance

ANZ’s customer protection teams operate 24/7 to monitor scam activity. Customers who believe they may have been targeted should contact ANZ immediately at 13 33 50 or visit www.anz.com.au/security/report-fraud.

Bogus but alarmingly convincing communications from cyber criminals pretending to be a widely recognised financial institution has become a major problem, reportedly costing the economy $33 billion in self-reported losses in 2020-21, according to the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD).

But financial experts are warning that cyber crime could become an even bigger headache for banks and potential victims alike following the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) recent decision to raise interest rates.

According to GBG solutions consultant Alex Cherniakov, fraudsters are at the ready to pounce on consumers at their most vulnerable or those expecting some kind of change to their financial situation.

“As more banks and financial institutions communicate changes related to the cost of servicing and interest rates in the coming weeks, scammers around the world will be looking to take advantage of this by impersonating banks, encouraging consumers to click on malicious links, and convincing consumers to share personal and banking information,” Mr Cherniakov said.

He warned Australians to “remain vigilant” as there will almost certainly be a rise in scams and fraud related to interest rates and repayment changes over the next few months.

Hoping to ensure Australian banking customers are aware of the potential risks in communicating with crafty scammers, Mr Cherniakov offered some common sense advice to help them avoid the ordeal of being swindled.

“Make sure you are only sharing information with trusted parties, never interact with a text, email, or unsolicited phone call,” Mr Cherniakov said.

He warned not to forget the basics such as maintaining strong passwords and using two-factor authentication.

Australia’s major banks have also offered warnings on their websites, including the Commonwealth Bank (CBA), which routinely reports phishing and investment scams.

Other major banks, including NAB, ANZ and Westpac also feature similar alert pages and forms to report suspicious activity.

A nationwide crackdown on incidents of fraud involving the creation of fake businesses to scam GST refunds from the federal government has led to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) firmly warning Australians not to engage with these shady businesses.

The ATO claims that $850 million is being spruiked on social media, and has launched Operation Protego, which is probing potentially fraudulent payments made to about 40,000 Australians who have each claimed on average around $20,000.

According to the ATO, the scam involved offenders setting up sham businesses and ABN applications, then submitting bogus Business Activity Statements to receive a false GST refund.

The ATO said it’s presently working with banks, the Reserve Bank (RBA) and an AUSTRAC-led collaboration between law enforcement and financial industry bodies to crack down on the organised scam.

ATO deputy commissioner and chief of the serious financial crime taskforce, Will Day, said that information on how to attempt the fraud is being shared online including via social media platforms.

“We are working with social media platforms to help remove content promoting this fraud, but if you see something that sounds too good to be true, it probably is” Mr Day said.

He warned that the people who have participated in this fraud are “not anonymous”.

“We know who they are, and we will be taking action."

He urged anyone involved to “face the music” and come forward now rather than face even tougher consequences later, including penalties and criminal charges.

“Unfortunately, as we take action to protect revenue, some legitimate taxpayers may find they have to take extra steps to receive their legitimate refunds as we have put extra controls in place as a result of this fraud. But we must emphasise that the fraudsters are not real or legitimate small businesses” Mr Day said.

“People who have participated in this fraud may have unwittingly followed advice they have read online, claiming to help access a loan from the ATO, or receive other financial government support such as a disaster payment."

“However, for others, there was nothing accidental or unintentional about setting up a fake business in their own name and seeking an unearned refund."

“Circumstances where there were deliberate attempts to defraud the ATO or a refusal to organise repayments will lead to tougher actions including criminal action.”

Initiatives by telcos and the ACMA have also led to a 95 per cent reduction in reports of mobile porting fraud.

More than 549 million scam phone calls have been blocked since the introduction of new rules for telcos in late 2020, according to the data from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The Reducing Scam Calls Code is among the initiatives developed by ACMA and the telecommunications industry in response to the agency’s Combating Scams Action Plan.

The code requires telcos to detect, trace and block scam calls as well as publish information to assist their customers manage and report scam calls, share information with other telcos and report identified scam calls to authorities or face penalties of up to $250,000.

“Every scam call that doesn’t reach a consumer is a good outcome, and every initiative that helps disrupt scammers makes Australia a harder target and increases confidence in our telecommunications services,” ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin said on Tuesday.

Research conducted by ACMA last year found that 98 per cent of Aussie adults have received unsolicited communications on their phone.

Around 86 per cent of Aussies said that they received scam calls and four out of ten said they received these calls on at least a weekly basis.

In the first quarter of this year, scam call complaints were down by 70 per cent for ACMA and 49 per cent for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch.

“We will be actively monitoring to see if this trend continues. Given the agility of scammers, we need to exercise some caution about shorter-term trends,” Ms O’Loughlin noted.

New rules introduced in mid-2020 have also resulted in a 95 per cent decrease in reports of mobile porting fraud, with ACMA anticipating a similar reduction in SIM-swap scams when new rules come into effect on 30 June.

Scamwatch reported that financial losses associated with phone scams increased by 61 per cent in the first quarter of 2022 compared to a year earlier, rising from about $20 million to $33 million.

Ms O’Loughlin said that the industry needed to prioritise the development of new rules to block SMS scams following a 331 per cent increase in financial losses during the first three months of the year to over $4 million.

She also called on the telco industry and the financial sector to work together to share data, and said that telcos needed to continue to build their capability to identify and block scams and provide more information to their customers about how to identify and stop scam calls.

The tax office said that scams involving TFN and ABN applications are on the rise in the lead up to tax time.

Taxpayers have been warned to be on the lookout for fake websites that purport to provide tax file numbers (TFN) and Australian business numbers (ABN).

The ATO said that it had seen an increase in scams involving fake services that offer to obtain a TFN or an ABN for a fee but do not actually provide the promised service.

Instead, these scams, which are often advertised on social media, steal both money and personal information from affected individuals.

“We are concerned about a recent increase in the number of victims reporting scams around TFN and ABN applications,” said ATO assistant commissioner Tim Loh.

“We are also still seeing scammers impersonating the ATO, making threats, demanding the payment of fake tax debts or claiming a TFN has been ‘suspended’ due to fraud.”

More than 50,000 people reported ATO impersonation scams during 2021 alone with victims losing over $800,000 in total.

The ATO noted that it was “free, quick and easy” for individuals to apply for a TFN via its own website and to apply for an ABN through the Australian Business Register.

Additionally, the tax office said that those who apply for a TFN or ABN through a tax agent should ensure that the tax agent is registered with the Tax Practitioners Board.

“Scammers are constantly developing new ways to target the community, and we expect to see more of these malicious attempts to steal identity details in the lead up to tax time,” said Mr Loh.

“We are encouraging everyone to be on alert and take the time to remind family and friends to be on the lookout and stay safe online, so you don’t fall victim to a scam this tax time.”

To avoid scammers, the ATO urged taxpayers to know their tax affairs and check whether they have a legitimate debt by logging into myGov or calling their tax agent.

Individuals should ensure that the website or phone number is accurate and legitimate and not engage with any call, text or email that they are uncertain about.

This includes only giving out personal and financial information to trusted people and remaining careful when clicking on links, downloading files or opening attachments.

The ATO said that taxpayers should also understand the legitimate ways to make payments, as scammers can lure victims into paying fake debts via unusual methods such as gift cards or bank accounts that are not linked to the tax office.

Anyone who believes they or someone they know may have fallen victim to a scam should contact the ATO as soon as possible via 1800 008 540 or the ATO’s website.

The ABS previously reported that more than 723,000 people, or 3.6 per cent of the population, experienced some type of scam during the 2020-21 financial year.
