New stats have revealed that Aussies are now richer than ever, having stashed away their cash during a year marred by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic shutdown.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), total household wealth is up 1.7 per cent to a record high $11.351 trillion.

“The September quarter estimate surpassed the previous high of $11,248 billion recorded in December quarter 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the head of finance and wealth at the ABS, Amanda Seneviratne.

Three main contributors led to the growth in household wealth, with residential assets topping the board following a 1.2 per cent increase in the quarter. Deposits came next with a 5.4 per cent growth, while superannuation balances followed closely following a 1.1 per cent expansion.

Average household wealth increased 1.6 per cent (up $6,850) to $441,649 per person in the September quarter, similar to the growth of 1.5 per cent recorded in the June quarter.

Additionally, the ABS noted, a 0.1 per cent increase in the population was the reason total wealth grew marginally more than average wealth.  

“The September quarter 2020 financial accounts reflected improvements in the Australian and global financial markets, as well as a partial recovery of the domestic economy in response to government and RBA policies, and easing social restrictions across most of Australia,” Ms Seneviratne said.

Residential assets rose $86.8 billion, recouping the losses experienced in the June quarter. Holding gains of $73.6 billion on residential assets reflected a rebound in property prices as social distancing measures, such as restrictions on auctions and open house inspections, eased and economic conditions began to improve.

The ABS data also revealed that household deposits increased a record $63.7 billion as households continued to save at elevated levels during the September quarter.

According to the bureau, continuing government income support packages such as JobKeeper, economic support payments and early access to superannuation were the key drivers of the increase in deposits.

If you’re finding that you’re saving more during the pandemic, you’re not alone.

Commonwealth Bank has reported that the total balance in savings accounts and term deposits has actually risen by 5 percent over January to July 2020. Total household income grew by 11 percent a year between January and August 21 2020.^[1] While wages haven’t increased significantly, government benefits have helped. Combined with lower spending over the same period, and many households are saving more than ever before.

So, should you be holding onto those savings? Investing? Paying down debt? What is the most financially savvy option if you have unexpected savings?

Of course the answer to how to spend any additional savings isn’t cut and dry. It will completely depend on your income, job security, amount of savings, amount of debt and much more. It’s best to seek advice from your financial planner on your financial situation. Here are some of the options they may recommend for you.

Hold onto those savings

If you don’t have a significant amount in savings, then holding onto those savings to provide an emergency fund may make sense. An emergency fund is designed to safeguard you should the unexpected happen such as losing your job, suddenly needing to repair something in your home or car, or coping with an unexpected illness.

There is no fixed dollar amount that should be in your emergency fund, it really depends on your expenses and income. A good rule of thumb is to have around at least three to six months of expenses covered in your emergency fund; however, it really comes down to what you’re comfortable with. If you personally feel more comfortable having a year’s worth of income in savings just in case and can afford it, go for it. If you’re comfortable having two months of expenses covered but have options to cut your expenses, liquidate investments or access other funds from family members on short notice, then that’s your choice.

Just remember that any savings you do put away act like an insurance policy, not an investment strategy. With interest rates so low at the moment, anything in a savings account will only generate a very small return.

Pay down debt

If you have a lot of debt, especially debt with a high interest rate such as credit card debt, car loan debt or personal loan debt, paying down some of this debt is a good choice. In most cases, you will be significantly better off in the long term by reducing (and eventually paying off) the expensive interest repayments.

When it comes to paying down your mortgage, this may also be a good choice. This will depend on your interest rate, loan term, how much you’ve paid down already, how much equity is in the property and your plans for the property in the short, mid and long term. Talk to your financial planner about whether this is the right option for you.

Invest

If you have available funds to invest and the cash flow to service any debt, investing can be a good option.

Investing during a recession can provide an opportunity to find discounted or bargain investments with long-term potential. Good options can include blue-chip shares or property. There will always be a certain level of risk, especially when trying to land a bargain, so it’s best to know this upfront and seek out opportunities which you anticipate will pay off in the long term.

Do your research and due diligence on each investment to make sure it’s right for your personal investment strategy. Talk to your financial planner to see how any potential investment will fit into your broader strategy.

Contribute to your super

Depending on your circumstances and how close to retirement you are, contributing additional funds to your super may be a good idea. This can be a tax-efficient option which helps to build savings for your retirement, but it can also lock away money which may be better utilised elsewhere in the short to medium term. Make sure you speak with both your accountant and financial planner to assess your particular situation.

Invest in yourself

It’s been a tough year and most of us are feeling the impacts, if not financially, then probably mentally. If you’re able to afford it, an investment in your own happiness, wellbeing and mental health can give you a real boost. This could be anything from a bottle of wine, a nice dinner out, a spa treatment, a holiday, a renovation, a piece of furniture or even a good book. The best thing about building wealth is that it allows you to create the life you want and to spend on the things and experiences that you value most. It’s important not to lose sight of that, even when times are tough.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen Australians being forced to dip into their life savings, which is impacting their ability to achieve financial goals, new research has found.

According to MyState Bank’s survey of 1,000 Australians, nearly one in three has been forced to dip into their savings, while one in 10 estimates that they have drained more than half of their life savings.

According to the research, paying for essentials such as groceries (39 per cent) and paying for household bills (39 per cent) are the biggest reasons why Australians are dipping into their savings during this time.  

MyState Bank general manager, customer experience, Heather McGovern said that despite financial hardship assistance on the table from the government and banks, many Australians are still struggling to manage their finances.

“What started out as a health crisis has been felt in the hip pockets of many Australians across the country. While lockdown measures have helped some Australians into a better financial position, for others, it has left gaping holes in their household income.”

According to the survey, nearly one in five Australians has seen their household income decrease by more than a quarter, which will likely grow over the coming months. 

“With financial support from the government winding back in September, many Australians are likely to feel the pinch even more. As a bank, we recognise the need to help our customers stay financially healthy during this time,” said Ms McGovern.

Ms McGovern said this is likely to have a flow-on impact on Australians’ spending in the future as savings goals will not be reached. 

“The economic implications of COVID-19 have caused many households across the country to redirect their savings to the basic necessities, shelving their big financial goals and decisions, at least, for the time being.”

Almost a quarter of those needing to access their savings (23 per cent) reported those savings were originally being put towards a deposit on a first home, while one in five said the savings were going towards their retirement. A further 25 per cent of respondents were intending to put the savings towards a holiday.

Furthermore, more than four in 10 Australians (41 per cent) expect their finances to continue to be affected in the next six to 12 months by the coronavirus pandemic.

Australians are still living in fear of worsening economic conditions, with a study revealing changed spending behaviours across the board despite varying levels of individual financial impact.

McKinsey & Company has identified four distinct consumer segments as emerging from the COVID-19 crisis.

That same research revealed price consciousness as being on the rise in Australia, with six in 10 Australians reporting being very or extremely concerned about the economy since early April.

While McKinsey & Company did find each consumer segment to be very distinct, the organisation’s leader of consumer packaged goods and retail practices Australia and New Zealand, Jenny Child, said there has been “a strong intent to pull back spending across almost all segments of consumers”.

“The cautious consumer is not a passing phenomenon, it’s here to stay,” she conceded.

Here are the four different types of consumers in a COVID-19-impacted world, according to McKinsey & Company:

1. Making ends meet

This segment was struggling prior to the pandemic and continue to struggle.

2. Optimistic but cautious

This group is worried about the health impacts of coronavirus, as well as the economic impacts. In saying this, this group is a more financially secure sector of the population.

3. Stable and consistent

McKinsey & Company outlined that this group is the highest income segment. These consumers have experienced a small amount of financial impact but have been able to hold onto a “relatively stable” mindset throughout without too much change to their spending behaviours.

4. Income in jeopardy

This segment consists of individuals and families who have already seen a significant change to their household income as a result of COVID-19. They also have a fear it will worsen further.

Despite the recent announcement that JobKeeper and JobSeeker stimulus methods will continue until at least March 2021, albeit at a lower rate, McKinsey & Company said it “will not cushion the full impact of COVID-19 on household incomes”.

“Households are tightening spending in anticipation,” it was reported, meaning that across all four segments, there has been an emergence of “longstanding recession behaviours”.

According to Ms Child, this has meant frugality, reuse and shifts to discounted shopping methods and bargain hunting are very much coming to the fore.

An “invisible” form of abuse, family violence that uses money as a method of control and coercion, is a real issue in Australia.

RMIT University’s Supriya Singh, an honorary professor in the university’s graduate school of business and law, explained that the use of financial or economic abuse is gendered – “usually a man using economic control, economic exploitation and employment sabotage”.

While financial and economic abuse are at times used interchangeably, Professor Singh outlined that “financial abuse deals with money, whereas economic abuse is wider in that it deals with money, property and economic resources”.

She shared a number of questions that individuals who might be the victim of the form of family abuse should ask themselves, noting that “the signs of financial or economic abuse revolve around control, exploitation and economic sabotage”.  

But the signs are different across cultures, for they revolve around different cultural practices of money. As a result, signs may appear differently across cultures and heritage, she conceded.

Here are 22 questions that may help identify economic or financial abuse:  

• Does he make me feel inadequate with money and then tell me it is my fault?
• Am I scared of spending money for essential expenses? Is he unreasonably questioning everyday expenditure on the home and children?
• Is my husband denying me money by not providing or sharing?
• Is he freely spending my earnings in the joint account, while he places his money in a separate account?
• Do I have any money to spend on myself?
• Is he selling my car, furniture or other goods without consulting with me?
• Am I able to drive a car to work?
• Can I use a mobile phone without his surveillance?
• Does he prevent me from giving reasonable gifts to my family and friends on special occasions?
• Has he taken loans on my name for a car that he alone uses?
• Has he asked me to sign for loans for his business?
• Has he pressured me to withdraw my super?
• Are all the utility bills on my name?
• Is he gambling?
• Has he forced me to apply for Centrelink benefits when he knows I do not qualify?
• Has he asked me to give him my savings or sign my property over to him?
• Has he demanded dowry?
• Is he sending all his money and some of mine – without consultation – to his family overseas for luxuries while the family here is going through difficult times?
• Has my husband’s family taken control of my jewellery?
• Does he threaten me with deportation if I do not follow his wishes?
• Is he dragging me through the courts to ensure I am left poor and vulnerable?
• Is he manipulating his work and earnings to prevent paying child support?

For anyone who is in need of assistance, Professor Singh has advised seeking out the assistance of services that deal with family violence.

These places “should also be able to offer at least temporary help and/or refer a person to specialist services like financial or family counselling”, she concluded.

From today, the second cash payment that has formed part of the Australian government’s economic response to the coronavirus will be made available.

The $750 cash payment follows the previous $750 payment that was provided from 31 March 2020 as an early stimulus measures in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

According to a fact sheet from the Treasury, the second payment is expected to be made to around 5 million social security, veteran and other income support recipients as well as eligible concession cardholders.

Around half of those – about 2.5 million – are pensioners.

To be eligible for the second payment, individuals must be residing in Australia and be receiving one of the payments or holding one of the concession cards that were eligible for the first payment, except for those who are receiving an income support payment that is eligible to receive the coronavirus supplement.

It is expected that the second payment will be paid automatically into the accounts of eligible Australians from 13 July 2020.

Eligible recipients include anyone on the age pension, disability support pension, carer payment, parenting payment, wife pension, widow B pension, ABSTUDY, Austudy, bereavement allowance, Newstart allowance, youth allowance, partner allowance, sickness allowance, carer allowance, pensioner concession card, veteran service pension, and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
