This surge in optimism has led a significant majority of institutional investors and wealth managers to predict an increased demand for various digital assets. The research, which involved participants from the US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates managing approximately $815 billion in assets, highlights the optimistic outlook for cryptocurrency markets, even exceeding initial expectations for 2024.

The findings reveal that 83% of the surveyed financial experts are anticipating that the success of Bitcoin and Ethereum will boost interest in altcoins. Additionally, 72% are confident that Bitcoin will surpass the $100,000 price point, although opinions vary on the timeframe for this milestone, with half of the optimists expecting it to happen within the next five years.

Surveys conducted in January 2024 had investors forecasting Bitcoin to reach $45,000 by year's end, yet the cryptocurrency has already exceeded $51,000, outstripping many predictions. Similarly, Ethereum's current value has surpassed the anticipated $2,500 mark, highlighting the accelerated growth and early achievement of year-end forecasts for the digital currency market. Currently, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization has already exceeded the $1.4 trillion level predicted by 60% of respondents, standing just under $2 trillion.

Anatoly Crachilov, CEO and Founding Partner of Nickel Digital, shared insights on the momentum gathered in the early part of the year, driven by a broad-based demand for Bitcoin, especially following a successful ETF launch. Crachilov noted, "The confidence of institutional investors in market growth in 2024 is striking, but even this optimism got eclipsed by the actual growth in the first weeks of the year." He further elaborated on the potential ripple effects on the broader digital asset market, suggesting that altcoins, particularly those with smart contract capabilities, are poised for significant growth due to their innovative use cases and smaller market capitalizations. This dynamic could result in altcoins outperforming Bitcoin and Ethereum over the investment cycle, propelled by incremental investments.

According to the research, which involved participants from the US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates managing combined assets of around $815.5 billion, a significant majority (81%) anticipate the halving process will boost Bitcoin's price, with approximately 25% expecting a substantial increase. Furthermore, around seven in ten respondents (69%) believe investment in Bitcoin will rise due to the halving, with 18% predicting a dramatic surge. Only a minimal 2% foresee a decrease in investment following the event.

The survey also delved into the understanding of institutional investors and wealth managers about the nuances of cryptocurrencies, particularly Ethereum's transition to a deflationary model post-The Merge, indicating an enhanced level of awareness. Approximately 78% of the respondents acknowledged awareness that Ethereum's upgrade last year has rendered it deflationary by roughly 1%, with more being removed from circulation than created.

He noted, "The implications and causality linked to the halving of Bitcoin's inflation rate—a phenomenon occurring every four years—are subjects of intense debate within the financial community." Crachilov further elaborated that the halving, governed by an algorithmic protocol, represents a marked departure from traditional monetary expansion by central banks, which often results in inflationary pressures. While Bitcoin has indisputably seen a remarkable 155% increase in value over the past year, captivating both institutional and retail investors alike, Nickel Digital asserts that now is the moment to diversify. Nickel Digital's review of historical trends from the market's low in December 2018 illustrates this narrative. Cosmos Asset Management has launched another crypto ETF in Australia.

A new fund providing access to the world’s first physically settled ether ETF has commenced trading on the Cboe Australia exchange.

The Cosmos-Purpose Ethereum Access ETF (CPET) from Cosmos Asset Management invests in the Purpose Ether ETF on the Toronto Stock Exchange which holds physically settled Ether tokens rather than derivatives.

“The CPET launch allows Australian investors the opportunity to add Ethereum to their portfolio alongside their traditional portfolio without the need for investors to worry about Ethereum wallets or cold storage,” explained Cosmos Asset Management CEO Dan Annan.

“It is another way Australians can invest in the ever-expanding cryptocurrency sector.”

The Purpose Ether ETF was originally launched in 2021 by the world’s largest digital asset ETF manager Purpose Investments in partnership with cryptocurrency custodian Gemini and has accumulated more than $570 million in assets under management.

“Purpose is excited to work alongside Cosmos to offer Australian investors safe and convenient exposure to Ether through best-in-class fund solution,” said Purpose COO and head of product Vlad Tasevski.

“Ether is the cryptocurrency we believe has a very exciting future and launching this ETF is a natural extension of our partnership with Cosmos to offer Australian investors with industry leading digital assets funds.”

CPET joins the Cosmos Purpose Bitcoin Access ETF (CBTC), as well as the ETFS 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (EBTC) and the ETFS 21Shares Ethereum ETF (EETH), which listed on Cboe Australia in May.

The three crypto ETFs launched later than originally anticipated and coincided with a significant crash across crypto markets triggered by the collapse of TerraUSD.

“As investors continue to seek cryptocurrency exposure, it’s important the market provides them with choice and access. CPET offers Australians with unique access to the world’s first physically settled Ether ETF, and we’re excited to watch its progress.”

Cosmos also confirmed that the new ETF will have no management fees through to 31 July this year following a similar offer for the launch of the Cosmos Purpose Bitcoin Access ETF.

CPET will be available through Cboe Australia market participants and supporting Australian stockbrokers.

A consumer group has released new data into crypto-assets.

CHOICE has called on the federal government to introduce stronger protections for consumers in the crypto market.

A new survey conducted by the consumer group found that one in nine Australians have purchased crypto such as bitcoin in the last 12 months and one in five are either involved or interested in crypto trading.

Majority of respondents agreed that cryptocurrency trading should have consumer protections similar to trading on the stock market.

CHOICE senior policy advisor, Patrick Veyret, said the number is rising on the back of “aggressive marketing” which often include celebrities and social media influencers.

“The crypto market is booming, but our laws are lagging behind. More and more Australians are purchasing crypto-assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum without adequate consumer protections,” Mr Veyret said.

“CHOICE is hearing from many Australians about financial loss and other harm caused by purchasing crypto-assets that were not what they appeared to be. We’ve seen a number of recent collapses of exchanges where people have lost all of their savings with no ability to get their money back.”

He continued: “Crypto-assets can be volatile, complex and high-risk products that are causing greater harm to the community as more and more people are risking their livelihoods based on misrepresentations and marketing.”

Mr Veyret has called for action from the government with CHOICE’s research showing a surge in crypto scams and two in five people who are interested are not investing due to the risk of scams.

The government is being called to:

1. Exchanges that sell or are in control of crypto-assets such as Bitcoin need to be subject to strong legal obligations, including a ban on market manipulation.
2. People should have strong consumer protections when purchasing crypto-assets.
3. The new regulatory regime should capture all crypto-asset providers without any loopholes.

“The new federal government needs to rein in the unregulated crypto industry as one of its financial services reform priorities. Australians expect the same level of consumer protection and regulatory oversight for crypto-assets as they do with other financial products,” Mr Veyret said.

“ASIC should also be granted powers to ban certain harmful crypto-assets from being marketed and sold to retail investors.”

In April, ASIC commissioner Danielle Press said the corporate regulator is keen to learn more about the “threats and opportunities” of crypto-assets, and encouraged those in the sector to actively campaign against and interrupt scams.

Meanwhile in March, Minister for superannuation, financial services and the digital economy, Jane Hume, pledged minimalist regulation for the blockchain and crypto sector, saying the government would ensure “fit for purpose, technology neutral” regulation.
