Flight disruptions feared as fuel prices soar and geopolitical tensions rise
As the summer holiday season approaches, travellers are becoming increasingly anxious about potential flight disruptions due to soaring aviation fuel prices and escalating geopolitical tensions. This growing concern is reflected in a noticeable surge in online searches related to flight cancellations, airline safety, and travel disruptions, according to data from travel eSIM service Saily.
Vykintas Maknickas, CEO of Saily, sheds light on the situation, explaining that while mass flight cancellations are unlikely, the uncertainty is affecting traveller behaviour. "People often assume that rising fuel prices immediately mean flights will stop operating, but that’s usually not how airlines react," he says. "In most cases, airlines adjust through higher ticket prices, route changes, longer flight paths, or reduced frequencies rather than canceling entire operations. But for travellers, even small disruptions can create a lot of stress."
This stress is prompting travellers to adopt more cautious strategies as they plan their summer holidays. Many are opting for direct flights, steering clear of short layovers, and purchasing travel insurance earlier than usual to mitigate the risk of delays or unexpected disruptions. The sentiment of caution is echoed by industry analysts, who warn that if fuel prices remain high throughout the summer, passengers could face more expensive last-minute tickets, reduced flight frequencies on certain routes, longer travel times due to rerouted flights avoiding restricted airspace, increased congestion at major airport hubs, and more schedule adjustments during peak travel periods.
Maknickas notes the shift in traveller preparation: "Even when flights continue operating normally, uncertainty changes how people prepare for trips. Passengers increasingly want to feel prepared for unexpected situations, whether that means having offline boarding passes ready, avoiding risky layovers, or ensuring they have internet access immediately after landing abroad."
The heightened anxiety among travellers is also a reflection of broader fatigue stemming from several years of strikes, staffing shortages, extreme weather events, and operational disruptions that have plagued airports and airlines worldwide. This history of instability has led many passengers to prioritise flexibility and preparedness when planning trips abroad.

In response to these concerns, Maknickas offers a checklist for the new summer travel season. He advises travellers to download boarding passes and hotel confirmations offline, avoid very short layovers during peak travel periods, monitor airline updates before departure, prepare backup payment methods, and save important travel documents on their devices before flying. Additionally, he suggests allowing extra buffer time for airport connections to accommodate any unforeseen delays.
While experts do not currently anticipate widespread shutdowns of international air travel, the rising operational costs and geopolitical instability are expected to continue impacting the overall travel experience throughout the summer months. Travellers are advised to stay informed and prepared as they navigate these challenges in the coming weeks.
The aviation industry is no stranger to fluctuations in fuel prices and political tensions, but the current climate is testing its resilience once again. As airlines strive to maintain operations amid these challenges, passengers are left to grapple with the uncertainty that accompanies international travel in such a volatile environment.
Maknickas concludes with a reminder that while the situation may seem daunting, being well-prepared can alleviate much of the stress associated with travel disruptions. "Preparation is key," he emphasises. "By taking proactive steps, travellers can ensure they are ready for whatever the summer travel season may bring."
