For many, “retirement” isn’t the long-awaited reward it’s supposed to be. It’s a word whispered like bad news, conjuring images of slowing down, fading away, and quietly stepping aside so the “real” action can happen without you. It feels less like a golden chapter and more like a line in the sand that says: the end is coming.

And that line is approaching faster than ever. In Australia, the workforce is aging at an unprecedented rate, and women are at the centre of that shift. According to the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR), the share of workers aged 55 and over has more than doubled in the past three decades, and by 2050, those aged 55+ will make up around 40 per cent of the adult population.

This isn’t a slow burn - it’s a demographic turning point.

Yet when we talk about retirement, we talk about money. Rarely do we talk about meaning. That’s where the real shock comes - when networks vanish, the title disappears, and the sense of purpose that once defined you is suddenly gone.

It might sound contradictory for an academic accountant to say, but we need to move our discussion away from money and move towards challenging the stigma around this phase of life, approaching it with the same ambition and foresight we’ve applied to our careers.

For women who’ve spent decades excelling in high-pressure, high-profile roles, retirement can be an emotional double blow: the shock of “lost time” as days blur together, and the disorienting loss of identity. Without the title, the influence, the milestones, it’s easy to feel invisible - even irrelevant. And this isn’t just personal; it reflects a broader societal pattern where older women are undervalued and underrepresented across many spheres of life.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. If we can confront the unspoken truths of retirement and plan ahead, we can transform this chapter into one of purpose, influence, and joy.

The time gap we don’t talk about

When you search “retirement for women” online, nine out of ten results are about money. Important, yes - but only one piece of the puzzle. Women are now retiring almost three years later than they did two decades ago, yet many still retire with 25–30% less superannuation than men. That’s the financial gap. The time gap is just as critical and deserves our attention - the gulf between having hours to fill and having a plan to fill them with meaning.

At The Main Act, we see how quickly those first months of “freedom” can turn into restless drifting. Without structure, time slips away. With intention, time becomes a platform for the life you’ve been too busy to imagine. As I often say: “You’ve planned your finances, now it’s time to plan your life.”

Reclaiming identity and influence

Leaving a professional role can feel like stepping out of the spotlight. In the workplace, you’re a leader, a decision-maker, a connector. Outside it, those networks can disappear almost overnight. I’ve met women who went from managing teams and budgets to wondering if they were still relevant. The truth is, influence doesn’t vanish - it simply needs a new stage. That could mean mentoring, community leadership, creative projects, or finally reviving passions put aside years ago.

Designing the next chapter

The first step is to think about who you are outside of your work. What’s important to you? What gives you energy? How do you want to contribute to your community? These aren’t abstract questions - they shape the rhythm and meaning of your life.

When almost two-thirds of women say they wish they had started planning sooner, we need to put planning on the main stage.

Retirement isn’t the end of your story; it’s not the dirty word people think it is. Rather, it’s the start of a chapter you get to write entirely on your own terms. But the women who thrive are the ones who start shaping it before it arrives. We are living through a once-in-a-generation moment where more women than ever are crossing that threshold. The question is: will we do it by default... or by design?

It’s time to shed the stigma, start the conversation, and lead the shift we need to see and redraw that line in the sand for ourselves.

The superannuation guarantee rate has increased from 11.5 per cent to 12 per cent from Tuesday, with super contributions also being added to Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay for the first time.

Rest superannuation fund said the changes represented a significant step forward for fairness and equity in the retirement system.

The fund estimated a 30-year-old Rest member could be around $11,200 better off at retirement due to the increased super guarantee rate.

Enrico Burgio, Rest's general manager of public policy and advocacy, said the increase was particularly significant for the fund's 2 million members who were more likely to work in part-time and casual roles.

"Many of our members retire with balances below the national average, so every extra dollar can make a real difference in shaping their future and getting them closer to their best-possible retirement," Mr Burgio said.

"An extra $11,200 at retirement is meaningful for so many of our members. It's a clear reminder that even small changes today can lead to big benefits in the future for working Australians."

The introduction of super contributions on Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay payments is designed to help close the gender super gap.

Mr Burgio said Tuesday's changes represented a milestone towards fairer and more equitable superannuation.

"When you consider that eligible parents will also now receive super on their Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay payments – helping to close the gender super gap – today is truly a milestone day towards fairer and more equitable super," he said.

The changes complement other recent reforms including the removal of the $450 monthly income threshold and proposed introduction of Payday Super and Delivering Better Financial Outcomes reforms.

However, Mr Burgio said gaps remained in the superannuation system for certain groups.

"While these changes are a hugely welcome step forward for all working Australians, we know there are still many, including women, younger workers, First Nations peoples and lower-income workers, who continue to miss out on the full benefits of our world-class superannuation system," he said.

Rest has put forward policy recommendations to government aimed at supporting fairer retirement outcomes.

The fund's priority recommendation is extending the superannuation guarantee to all under-18 workers, removing what it describes as an unfair exclusion for those working less than 30 hours per week.

Rest, established in 1988, is one of Australia's largest profit-to-member superannuation funds with around 2 million members and approximately $93 billion in funds under management as at 31 March 2025.

The analysis assumes a 30-year-old member with a starting balance of $31,890 earning $46,436 annually, retiring at age 67 with continuous accumulation of super guarantee contributions.

Rest superannuation fund has achieved the highest sustainability classification for its Sustainable Growth investment option from the Responsible Investment Association Australasia.

The Sustainable Growth option has received the 'Sustainable Plus' classification, which is the highest of three categories in RIAA's Sustainability Classifications Initiative.

The classification forms part of RIAA's existing Responsible Investment Certification Program and demonstrates that the investment option meets stringent responsible investment standards.

Rest General Manager, Responsible Investment & Sustainability, Leilani Weier, said the fund was proud to receive the classification.

"With around half of our members aged under 30 and decades from retirement, we are pleased to offer a choice investment option which meets RIAA's highest classification standard," she said.

"This is consistent with Rest's broader sustainability aspiration to support actions which help to build a better, fairer and more sustainable future."

Weier said Rest's responsible investment approach was important to members, with 94 per cent of surveyed members agreeing it was important the fund invest responsibly and ethically without impacting investment returns.

The Sustainable Growth option's investments in listed Australian and overseas shares target a weighted average carbon intensity that is at least 50 per cent lower than respective benchmarks.

"Further, Sustainable Growth's investments in listed Australian and Overseas shares (excluding private equity) target a weighted average carbon intensity (WACI) (measured in tonnes of carbon emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) per million dollars in sales in US dollars) that is at least 50% lower than their respective benchmarks, being the ASX300 and MSCI World ex Australia," Weier said.

RIAA Co-CEO Estelle Parker said the classification initiative aimed to help investors identify quality sustainable investment options.

"In today's market, the diversity of investment products can be overwhelming," she said.

"RIAA's Sustainability Classifications Initiative aims to differentiate products, enabling investors who prioritise sustainable and responsible investing to identify quality options underpinned by reliable, fit for purpose investment processes."

Parker congratulated Rest for achieving the Sustainability Plus classification.

Rest's Sustainable Growth option was first certified as a Responsible Investment Product under the RIAA Responsible Investment Certification Program in 2022.

Rest, established in 1988, is one of Australia's largest profit-to-member superannuation funds, with over 2 million members and over $93 billion in funds under management as at 31 March 2025.

A consortium of finance industry leaders has launched an SMSF Innovation Council to help Australia's $1.02 trillion self-managed superannuation fund industry navigate digital transformation.

The 12-member founding council was announced at the Australian Digital Economy Conference in Queensland and comprises trustees, accountants, auditors, fintech leaders and policy influencers.

The council is chaired by Kate Cooper, CEO of cryptocurrency platform OKX Australia.

The consortium aims to offer the SMSF industry a non-commercial, industry-led forum to foster collaboration and share knowledge to help trustees and professionals explore future investing opportunities.

Its creation follows studies showing digital finance innovation could generate significant economic benefits for Australia.

According to the Tech Council of Australia, the digital assets sector could add up to $60 billion to Australia's GDP by 2030 with supportive policies and regulatory settings.

BGL Simple Fund 360, which has around 49 per cent market share of Australia's 645,000-plus SMSFs, revealed that 3.6 per cent of SMSF tax returns lodged through its platform in the 2024 financial year included cryptocurrency holdings.

These funds totalled more than $919 million in value, demonstrating strong interest in crypto assets within the SMSF space.

The council's formation comes ahead of the launch of OKX Australia's SMSF offering, featuring institutional-grade security protocols, automated reporting tools and dedicated onboarding staff.

"As Australia's retirement landscape evolves, SMSFs represent a critical pillar of financial self-determination for Australians," said Kate Cooper, CEO of OKX Australia.

"The mission of the Council is to create opportunities for technology development, knowledge-sharing and public-private consultation needed to incorporate aspects of the digital economy into diversified retirement portfolios, while ensuring trustees navigate digital economy opportunities with proper governance," she said.

The council's inaugural roundtable discussion explored how SMSFs are adapting to new asset classes and evolving alongside trustee expectations and regulatory complexity.

Discussions included the 719 per cent five-year growth in digital asset allocations through Australian SMSFs despite a significant advisory gap in the market.

"Digital assets are now part of SMSF portfolios, but reporting and audit standards haven't kept up," said Shelley Banton, SMSF Innovation Council member and Head of Technical at ASF Audits.

"I joined the Council to help shape practical frameworks that make crypto audit-ready, not audit-challenging," she said.

Shane Brunette, council member and Founder & CEO of Crypto Tax Calculator, said his company processes thousands of SMSF crypto tax reports.

"We see firsthand where users and professionals struggle," he said.

"The Council is a great opportunity to turn those pain points into smart, scalable solutions," he said.

Key focus areas include developing best practice governance frameworks, providing education and support tools, contributing to regulatory clarity discussions, and elevating trustee experiences.

Other founding members include Jeevan Tokhi from BGL Corporate Solutions, Michael Jeffriess from LightYear Docs, David Saul from Saul SMSF and Shane Mays from PKF Melbourne.

The Australian Digital Economy Conference is hosted by the Digital Economy Council of Australia, the peak industry body for blockchain, digital assets and emerging technologies.

Australians are demonstrating significantly higher levels of optimism and confidence about their retirement prospects, with sentiment reaching a five-year peak despite ongoing global economic challenges.

The findings come from State Street Global Advisors' 2025 Global Retirement Reality Report, which surveyed over 4,300 employees across the US, UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada who participate in defined contribution savings plans.

Among the 606 Australian respondents, one-third expressed optimism about being financially prepared for retirement by their planned retirement age, representing a notable increase from 24 per cent in August 2023 and 22 per cent in May 2020.

Australia ranks as one of the most optimistic countries regarding financial preparedness for retirement, sitting just behind the US at 34 per cent.

Canadian and UK respondents reported the lowest optimism levels, both at 20 per cent.

The average expected retirement age for Australian respondents is 66, aligning with the US but later than Canada's average of 64.

The survey identified the top three factors positively influencing retirement confidence for Australians: 43 per cent cited having little or no short-term debt, loans and credit card bills, while 43 per cent expressed confidence that their superannuation is invested wisely.

Additionally, 40 per cent noted their financial ability to save for retirement as positively affecting their confidence.

Jonathan Shead, head of investments for Australia at State Street Global Advisors, said the survey presented a hopeful picture despite ongoing concerns.

"While this year's survey presents a hopeful picture, with respondents in Australia and globally generally optimistic about their retirement prospects, the impact of inflation and the broader economic environment remain real concerns over the long term," Shead said.

"There are still 28 per cent of Australian respondents expecting to partially retire and continue working, while over 10 per cent cannot envision ever being financially secure enough to afford retirement."

Australians identified inflation, increased cost of living and medical expenses as the top three barriers negatively impacting their retirement confidence.

"Complex interactions between the public and private systems, concern about health insurance costs in an inflationary environment, and uncertainty about out-of-pocket costs are likely all detracting for retirement confidence for Australians," Shead said.

"This highlights the tension between personal financial management and global macroeconomic uncertainty."

The survey found that one-third of Australians have changed their outlook on retirement in the past six months, with many adjusting their plans by either delaying full retirement or embracing partial retirement.

Gender and income disparities emerge in retirement confidence levels, with 42 per cent of male respondents optimistic about being financially prepared for retirement compared to 24 per cent of female respondents.

Women were less likely to have investments outside superannuation at 40 per cent versus 53 per cent for men, and were less likely to have a financial adviser.

"The facts about gender and superannuation have been debated in the public square for years," Shead said.

"Median balances for women are lower than men across all age groups."

The survey revealed that respondents with an income of $100,000 or more are more confident about retirement financial preparedness.

Younger workers tend to be more optimistic about their retirement prospects compared to those nearing retirement, though optimism significantly declines at age 45.

Over half of surveyed participants in Australia associate retirement income with a steady, dependable income stream, though about one in five still view it as simply a drawdown plan.

On average, Australians believe they will need just over half of their current income to maintain their desired lifestyle in retirement.

The survey found a significant confidence gap between advised and unadvised clients, with 64 per cent of advised clients expecting to be financially prepared for retirement compared to only 25 per cent of unadvised clients.

More than one in four Australian respondents do not have a plan for their retirement savings once retired, with a gender gap evident as women are less likely to have a plan than men.

"Australians recognise that finances can be complex. And yet, less than 10 per cent of survey respondents have sought financial advice in the past six months," Shead said.

"With an aging population and an environment where change and uncertainty remain constant, retirement planning has never been more important."
